This DVD is a compilation of 3 Vision Street Wear titles from the 80's. "Psycho Skate", "Bluegrass Aggression Session" and "Rage in the Badlands".

There have been some mumblings about Vision releasing these classic flicks as a ploy to generate money. Guess what? All sales are for that purpose. Do you feel robbed by owning Psycho Skate on DVD? I don't, but if you - don't buy it! Some of the contest footage can get monotonous, but there are always some redeeming gems. And they put three flicks on each DVD - that's kinda cool. They could easily have released them as singles and made you pay $20 for each one.
Anyway...

Psycho Skate (1988)

Staring:
Lester Kasai, Steve Caballero, Primo Desiderio, Diane Desiderio, Bert Lamar, Bruce Logan, Mark Ragowski, Christian Hosoi, Tony Hawk, Rodney Mullen, Mark Gonzales, Barry Deck, Marty Jiminez, Chuck Haults, John Grigley, Ton Groholski.

"A journey into skate heartland", says the announcer in an ominous tone. This is the year I really got back into skating (1988). Fresh outta school and looking for something to do. I remember picking up the sk8 mags at the time and being mesmerized by them. The over-powering effect of Mtv was in full effect and I was dazzled (gay word) by the imagery.

Psycho Skate hails to the days when garage bands would set up on the side of a skate park and play their hearts out - stoking all the sk8 rats. When was the last time you saw Lester Kasai break dancing? ‘Nuff said, eh? You'll also find a lot of footage that was used in the the film, Stoked, about Gator. Killing others is such a lousy way to screw up your own life. He was full of passion for skating and his own self image. Who thought skate berets were a good idea? Hell, I bought one... or two.

There's some great footage of Hosoi at a highest air event. That kid, now an ex-con, could really fly back in the day. I'm glad he's back. He was and is a complete asset to skateboarding. If Christian's high airs don't bring you back to 1988, then check out Tony Hawk playing the "720" video game. There's also some contest footy with the Hawk.

Taking you way back is some sidewalk surfing and spinners circa 1964 in Oceanside, CA and at Huntington Beach circa 1963.

Remember Primo & Diane Desiderio and the synchronized freestyle routines they used to do at contests? This act always seemed like an intermission side-show display. I was always torn between emotions when I saw them. I thought it was cool as hell that they found a way to skate together, but it was also fairly gay.

Not to seem too one dimensional, Psycho Skate features Bert Lamar on the mountain snowboarding. We get a look at him on a slalom course and in a pipe.

Bluegrass Aggression Session (NSA - 1988)

Staring:
Christian Hosoi, Tony Hawk, Jeff Phillips, Lance Mountain, Ken Park, Kevin Harris, Micke Alba, Mark Anthony, Tony Magnusson, Chris Miller.

The Louisville Convention Center, home of the Kentucky Derby, hosts another monster half pipe contest along with a freestyle competition. You couldn't have a sk8 contest in 1988 without some sort of forum for Rodney Mullen!

The commentators were Richard Blade and John Hogan. I won't go into another diatribe about Richard Blade, but check out our review of Vision Street Wear's Classic SK8 Vol. 3 for my introspective look at this extremely gay commentator of action sports.

Sometimes these old contests get lost in time making it hard to put them in perspective. In '88, Ken Park was just about to graduate college with a business degree and the McTwist was labeled the hardest trick in skateboarding. Yikes!

Rage in the Badlands (NSA - 1985)

Staring:
Christian Hosoi, Tony Hawk, Lance Mountain, Chris Miller, Everett Rosencranz, Steve Caballero, Frank Hawk, Mike McGill, Lester Kasai, Steve Stedham.

This pool contest was held at the Pipeline skate park in Upland, CA... aka the Upland Pipeline. It was a somewhat unique contest in that it was held in the combi-pools with both round and square corners. The winner was likely to be the skater who was able to stay on his/her board.

Of interest was seeing Frank Hawk (Tony's Dad and NSA founder and prez) discussing the upcoming tour and how he tries to keep a low profile when it comes to cheering for Tony. Might look bad if the NSA president's son wins every NSA contest.

The Bottom Line

If you want to re-live the 80's scene, this is a cool disc to watch. Having lived through this sk8 era, I dig this DVD. Psycho Skate alone makes this a DVD worth owning.
