This is a hard DVD to review. It's either love or hate. How ever you feel, this DVD is all about wide decks, conical wheels, 80's tricks and more day-glow fashion than allowed by law. Contests in the 80's were much different from today with tricks becoming so much more technical.

This DVD is a compilation of 3 Vision Street Wear titles from the 80's. "Red Hot Skate Rock", "NSA ‘86 Oceanside Attack" and "NSA ‘85 Border Wars".

Red Hot Skate Rock

Staring:
Tony Hawk, Christian Hosoi and others.

Despite rolling tons of of credits at the end of the video, there is no mention of the skaters aside from thanking the Vision Skate Team. Tony and Christian were the only names I caught. It's hard to say what this video is all about. There are 2 half pipes - back to back - and the Red Hot Chili Peppers are playing on a stage behind the ramps. It doesn't seem to be a contest, but more of an expo - a talent showcase for the Vision team.

Whatever it is, the crowd is going wild and this is the final performance of the Chili Peppers with their original line-up. Their performance is plastered on a huge jumbo-screen above the band. Although its a short video, its wild to see the scene in that era.

NSA ‘86 Oceanside Attack

Staring:
Christian Hosoi, Johnee Kop, Eric Dressen, John Lucero, Rob Roskopp, Jim McCall, Shane Rouse, Bob Shmeltzer, Ray Meyers, Reggie, Barnes, Bill Danforth, Bill Ruff, Mark Gonzales, Jeff Kendall, Rodney Mullen, Primo Desederio, Don Brown, Per Welinder, Kevin Harris, Tommy Guerro, Natas Kaupas and Steve Cabellero.

This NSA (National Skateboarding Association) contest featured both street and freestyle categories. It's hard to believe that there was a freestyle category and no vert. All the kids they interviewed love Rodney Mullen, but then they all say the don't do freestyle - they're all about ramps. Darn kids!

The street course had small & large spine ramps, a ground-level rail slide, picnic table and a wall. The freestylers just bounced around in the center of it all. This is the contest in which Natas tried to grind a handrail. He didn't make the trick, but it gave people something new to think about!

In the finals, Rodney Mullen and Steve Cabellero placed first in their categories.

NSA ‘85 Border Wars

Staring:
Christian Hosoi, Jeff Grosso, Lester Kasai, Steve Steadham, Mark Ragowski, Eddie Reategui, Chris Miller, Neil Blender, Alan Losi and Tony Magnusson.

Finally a vert contest! This contest was held in Vancouver, British Columbia.

The Bottom Line

If you want to re-live the 80's scene, this is a fun disc to watch. Having lived through this sk8 era, I love this DVD. Outside of nostalgia, it may not have too much lasting appeal.
