Even with a minimal knowledge of math and economics, it doesn't take much brain power to realize that your local skate shop offers the best deals on high quality equipment. You can save a buck or two by shopping for skateboards at discount stores, but those cheap decks will barely make it through a single day.
If you skate hard, you need a reliable properly made skateboard. You'll only find that level of quality in the products sold by your local skate shop. One-stop shopping is convenient, and your skate shop will hook you up with everything you need. Skateboards sold by discount stores will likely send you to the Emergency Room - very inconvenient.
If you didn't learn all this in school - find a new school!

Only independent skateboard shops sell quality products that won't break or fall apart in the first 10 minutes of use. Boards purchased from crappy department stores and gluttonous box-stores are unsafe and will usually result in unnecessary injuries.
Your local skate shop is the only place that cares about you and ensuring you get high quality equipment. Department stores, toy stores and sporting goods stores only want your money. Independent skate shops want to keep you as a customer by helping you get the best products available.
