Ramps do not build themselves. If you don't have a local park or suitable terrain, it may be up to you to convert your backyard into a half pipe of skater bliss. Probably a job too big for one person to do alone. You likely have a few friends who will pitch in some labor and money if they get to reap the rewards of private backyard sk8 sessions.
Through teamwork, you can turn a skater-wasteland into a skate paradise - one plywood sheet at a time. Your local skate shop works in a similar manner. Like your new ramp, your local skate shop is also a hub for the local skate scene. Skaters convene there to meet-up, buy parts, find out local events and maybe catch a demo or signing at the shop.
You wouldn't go to Wal-Mart or Target for this. They too sell skateboards, right? Sure, but they sell inferior ones that will fall apart unlike the quality skateboards at your local skate shop. Thus the local skate shop plays a key role in providing good equipment as well as a social hub for your scene. Without them you'd lose a key resource in terms of product and friendship. Box-stores can never duplicate the vast utility of a local skateboard shop!
Uninformed skaters/consumers need your help. You can lend a hand and help support local skate shops by downloading these SYLSS "Crappy Skateboard" WARNING LABELS (4-up PDF files) and stick 'em on those crappy products you encounter in the mall, discount stores, toy stores and sporting goods stores.
Only independent skateboard shops sell quality products that won't break or fall apart in the first 10 minutes of use. Boards purchased from crappy department stores and gluttonous box-stores are unsafe and will usually result in unnecessary injuries.
Your local skate shop is the only place that cares about you and ensuring you get high quality equipment. Department stores, toy stores and sporting goods stores only want your money. Independent skate shops want to keep you as a customer by helping you get the best products available.
