Whether you like modern things or vintage things - retro is back with a vengeance. Styles from days gone by are coming full circle and reappearing on store shelves. From fashion to video games and from car to skateboards, retro styles are making a comeback. You can find a fair amount of re-issue skateboards these days in 9" or 10" widths. Welcome to the '80s. Kids who didn't exist in these previous eras have no clue that these styles are making a come-back. They just see some crazy shit on the shelf and dismiss it.
If you've lived through these cycles or done your history homework, you'll know that most styles are cyclical. If you wait long enough... it'll come back. Be on the lookout for fucking bell-bottom pants! One element that is not cyclical is "QUALITY". It doesn't come and go with fads or trends. It either exists or it doesn't. All products (new and old alike) should evolve from a commitment to quality.
As skaters, we know new technologies evolve to further enhance the quality of our equipment. However, there are many manufacturers who remove quality from their process in the quest for more money. These assholes contribute a lot of product to skateboarding. Fortunately it is easy to discern who carries legit quality products and who's out to make money at YOUR expense.
If you see a complete skateboard for $20 at a discount store - it's crap! The same holds true for any skateboard found in box-stores, toy stores and sporting goods stores. Don't be fooled and waste your money on crap. Go to your local independent skate shop for high quality product, advice and info!
Uninformed skaters/consumers need your help. You can lend a hand and help support local skate shops by downloading these SYLSS "Crappy Skateboard" WARNING LABELS (4-up PDF files) and stick 'em on those crappy products you encounter in the mall, discount stores, toy stores and sporting goods stores.
Only independent skateboard shops sell quality products that won't break or fall apart in the first 10 minutes of use. Boards purchased from crappy department stores and gluttonous box-stores are unsafe and will usually result in unnecessary injuries.
Your local skate shop is the only place that cares about you and ensuring you get high quality equipment. Department stores, toy stores and sporting goods stores only want your money. Independent skate shops want to keep you as a customer by helping you get the best products available.
