Sometimes it's nice to see someone bent over, but not when it's you being bent over the counter of a discount store while they sell you crappy inferior skateboard products. Nobody should have to take it like that!
You have to look out for yourself and know when someone it trying to rip you off with inferior skate products. Your local skateboard shop is the best source for quality boards and equipment. Discount stores, toy stores and even sporting goods stores all sell cheap skateboards (the kind that fall apart on day one). Don't let them fool you into thinking their $25 complete is a great bargain, because that's a lot of money for very little firewood!
Head to your independent skateboard shop, where you'll be respected, befriended and advised of all the latest innovations in the skateboard industry. Skate shops are like a home away from home. It's a meeting place, a hang out and central hub of your local skate scene. Would you ever meet your friends at a Wal-Mart before a session?!?
Uninformed skaters/consumers need your help. You can lend a hand and help support local skate shops by downloading these SYLSS "Crappy Skateboard" WARNING LABELS (4-up PDF files) and stick 'em on those crappy products you encounter in the mall, discount stores, toy stores and sporting goods stores.
Only independent skateboard shops sell quality products that won't break or fall apart in the first 10 minutes of use. Boards purchased from crappy department stores and gluttonous box-stores are unsafe and will usually result in unnecessary injuries.
Your local skate shop is the only place that cares about you and ensuring you get high quality equipment. Department stores, toy stores and sporting goods stores only want your money. Independent skate shops want to keep you as a customer by helping you get the best products available.
