We're very persuaded by Piper Fawn. Something about her makes us want to obey her every word... especially when it comes to supporting our local skateboard shop. There have been many debates over what constitutes a "real skateboarder", but there's no doubt about "real skate shops". Too many greedy corporations are trying to jump on the skate bandwagon and pretend to be skateboard shops. Sporting goods stores are not skate shops and never will be. As soon as you see footballs and skis, you know you're in the wrong store for buying quality skateboard product.
Just because a product on the shelf looks like a skateboard, don't assume it's a quality skateboard. Many discount stores sell cheap imitations that will quickly break and cause injury. If you're going to skate, make sure you buy a high quality board, trucks and wheels. Anything less is just a toy. Don't be fooled - insist on high quality. The best way to ensure you're buying a quality product is to shop at a dedicated independent skate shop.
Uninformed skaters/consumers need your help. You can lend a hand and help support local skate shops by downloading these SYLSS "Crappy Skateboard" WARNING LABELS (4-up PDF files) and stick 'em on those crappy products you encounter in the mall, discount stores, toy stores and sporting goods stores.
Only independent skateboard shops sell quality products that won't break or fall apart in the first 10 minutes of use. Boards purchased from crappy department stores and gluttonous box-stores are unsafe and will usually result in unnecessary injuries.
Your local skate shop is the only place that cares about you and ensuring you get high quality equipment. Department stores, toy stores and sporting goods stores only want your money. Independent skate shops want to keep you as a customer by helping you get the best products available.
