Sports can be fun and invigorating. But skateboarding is not a sport. It's a lifestyle embroiled with counter-culture and maniacal insanity. I's a physical activity that is misunderstood by all who see it from afar and can't quite figure out how to be a part of the insanity.
Sporting goods stores are much the same. They sell skateboards, but these stores stay way outside the realm of skateboarding. They just don't get it. Selling cheap inferior boards may put some money in their pockets, but it doesn't let them in to our world.
If you want to be a skater, buy a skateboard - but do so from a reputable dealer like your local indy skate shop. Don't expect to get good advice or product from a clerk who just finished inventory on jockstraps and knows which isle you can find golf tees. Just because you see a skateboard on the shelf at a sporting goods store (or Kmart for that matter) don't assume its just like the ones you'll find in a dedicated skate shop. They are not the same. Demand quality!
Uninformed skaters/consumers need your help. You can lend a hand and help support local skate shops by downloading these SYLSS "Crappy Skateboard" WARNING LABELS (4-up PDF files) and stick 'em on those crappy products you encounter in the mall, discount stores, toy stores and sporting goods stores.
Only independent skateboard shops sell quality products that won't break or fall apart in the first 10 minutes of use. Boards purchased from crappy department stores and gluttonous box-stores are unsafe and will usually result in unnecessary injuries.
Your local skate shop is the only place that cares about you and ensuring you get high quality equipment. Department stores, toy stores and sporting goods stores only want your money. Independent skate shops want to keep you as a customer by helping you get the best products available.
