Will your local skate shop be around in 5 years? Will it be around in 2 years?
Times are tough and skateboard shops are hurting. People still skate. Skateboarding is still growing in popularity. The problem is greed! Discount stores buy cheap inferior skateboards and sell them as though they are the same as any other board. Nothing could be farther from the truth. The boards sold in discount stores are dangerous and made from cheap parts.
Independent skate shops are not part of a chain that has massive buying power. They are often single locations fighting to keep the doors open because they love skateboarding. Box-stores only love money and will do anything to make more money. The biggest threat to skate shops is diminishing sales. Every time someone buys a cheap-ass board at Wal-Mart, that is a sale that the local skate shop doesn't make. Local skate shops rely on every sale to stay alive in the skateboard industry. Losing sales to toy stores is frustrating and unnecessary! Always buy from a reputable dealer - your local skate shop!
Uninformed skaters/consumers need your help. You can lend a hand and help support local skate shops by downloading these SYLSS "Crappy Skateboard" WARNING LABELS (4-up PDF files) and stick 'em on those crappy products you encounter in the mall, discount stores, toy stores and sporting goods stores.
Only independent skateboard shops sell quality products that won't break or fall apart in the first 10 minutes of use. Boards purchased from crappy department stores and gluttonous box-stores are unsafe and will usually result in unnecessary injuries.
Your local skate shop is the only place that cares about you and ensuring you get high quality equipment. Department stores, toy stores and sporting goods stores only want your money. Independent skate shops want to keep you as a customer by helping you get the best products available.
