When you need to travel by plane nothing is more frustrating than flight delays and the TSA labeling you a terrorist because you packed an extra ounce of shampoo and a pair of nail clippers (nail clippers are dangerous weapons, you know). Of course not all trips require the typically delinquent service provided by all major airlines... but there can still be issue.
Skate road trips are the fucking best! Hop in the car for a destination and you never know what you might find along the way. If you're prepared, you'll be all set. If you've read our guide to packing for skateboard road trips, you know that being prepared will save time and money. Despite all the preparations, some folks still think a cheap skateboard is the way to go.
So why do people go out and buy crappy skateboards at discount chain stores like Wal-Mart, Target or Toys R Us? Usually because they don't know any better or think that a "skateboard" is a "skateboard". I always being spare parts since you never know how close you'll be to a real skate shop, but I sure as Hell don't bring a $25 skateboard. I always buy the best quality items i can find at my local skate shop.
Uninformed skaters/consumers need your help. You can lend a hand and help support local skate shops by downloading these SYLSS "Crappy Skateboard" WARNING LABELS (4-up PDF files) and stick 'em on those crappy products you encounter in the mall, discount stores, toy stores and sporting goods stores.
Only independent skateboard shops sell quality products that won't break or fall apart in the first 10 minutes of use. Boards purchased from crappy department stores and gluttonous box-stores are unsafe and will usually result in unnecessary injuries.
Your local skate shop is the only place that cares about you and ensuring you get high quality equipment. Department stores, toy stores and sporting goods stores only want your money. Independent skate shops want to keep you as a customer by helping you get the best products available.
