Landing a trick is just as difficult as sinking a hole-in-one on the links. Hell, just hitting a golf ball straight is a challenge. As with most endeavors, your equipment is just as important as your skill. Tony Hawk doesn't attempt the 900 on a $20 skateboard from a sporting goods store any more than Tiger Woods hones his game with clubs from a discount box-store.

The rest of us may not be billionaire iconic athletes, but that doesn't mean we have to shop at Target, Kmart or Wal-Mart when we need to upgrade skateboard equipment! Nobody should be buying skateboards from these box-stores or from toy stores or sporting goods stores. Only your local independent skate shop sells quality equipment design by real skaters for real skaters. They may cost a bit more, but if you have a $500 deductible on your health insurance, that's a moot point.

Inferior boards sold by discount chains are poorly made and often break very easily. This only leads to accidents and injuries. You should always purchase the highest quality gear you can. Spending a little extra to get precision made equipment, from renown manufacturers, will pay off in fewer broken decks, fewer injuries and better skating.

Uninformed skaters/consumers need your help. You can lend a hand and help support local skate shops by downloading these SYLSS "Crappy Skateboard" WARNING LABELS (4-up PDF files) and stick 'em on those crappy products you encounter in the mall, discount stores, toy stores and sporting goods stores.

Only independent skateboard shops sell quality products that won't break or fall apart in the first 10 minutes of use. Boards purchased from crappy department stores and gluttonous box-stores are unsafe and will usually result in unnecessary injuries.

Your local skate shop is the only place that cares about you and ensuring you get high quality equipment. Department stores, toy stores and sporting goods stores only want your money. Independent skate shops want to keep you as a customer by helping you get the best products available.
