Parents and grandparents need to be educated on the fine art of buying a skateboard as a gift. Who doesn't want a skateboard for Christmas!?!

The problem is many parents and grandparents don't know what a real skateboard is. They see a plank with four wheels and they assume they don't have to look any further. It's not entirely their fault - after all, they don't know shit about skateboards. Therefore you need to define exactly what you want.

Tell them the location of your favorite skate shop. Let them know the specific brands you want (Element deck, Indy trucks, Bones wheels, etc...). Make sure they know if you want a complete (assembled at the skate shop) or a box full of parts. The more you tell them, the less Christmas morning will suck when you find they bought some random board at a discount box-store. Its up to you to save Christmas!

Uninformed skaters/consumers need your help. You can lend a hand and help support local skate shops by downloading these SYLSS "Crappy Skateboard" WARNING LABELS (4-up PDF files) and stick 'em on those crappy products you encounter in the mall, discount stores, toy stores and sporting goods stores.

Only independent skateboard shops sell quality products that won't break or fall apart in the first 10 minutes of use. Boards purchased from crappy department stores and gluttonous box-stores are unsafe and will usually result in unnecessary injuries.

Your local skate shop is the only place that cares about you and ensuring you get high quality equipment. Department stores, toy stores and sporting goods stores only want your money. Independent skate shops want to keep you as a customer by helping you get the best products available.
