Taco Pop-Shuvits
Create themed taco-like snacks using cookie-cutters (Halloween, Xmas, etc...) to create the desired shapes. Make a batch as an appetizer or bake a crap-load (double or triple the ingredients) and serve them as the entree. The total cooking time is 12 minutes and makes about 15 taco-like things.
Ingredients (main):
- 1 tbs. vegetable oil (or any type of cooking spray)
- ½ cup chopped onion
- ½ lb. ground turkey
- ½ tsp. dried oregano
- ½ tsp chili powder
- 1 package (15 ounces) refrigerated pie crusts
- 1/3 cup chopped tomato
- 1/3 cup shredded cheese
If you feel adventurous and want to delve into the Martha Stewart-esque theme of choice, you can also mix up some colors to apply to the outside of your tacos.
Ingredients (optional paint):
- 4 egg yokes, divided
- 4 tsp water
- liquid food coloring
Other Stuff You'll Need
- 1 baking sheet or pan
- 1 cookie cutter (or more, if you want to be less boring)
- 1 large skillet
- Rolling pin (or make-shift equivalent - like a full can of beer)
- Small bowls and an egg beater » if you choose to paint the outsides.
Preparation
I.
- Chop up your onion.
- Heat oil (or cooking spray) on medium heat.
- Add the onion and cook until tender (a few minutes)
- Add turkey stir occasionally and cook until turkey is no longer pink.
- Stir in Oregano and chili powder.
- Set aside while preparing the other stuff.
II.
- On a lightly floured surface, roll the pie crust slightly wider (in diameter) than it already is. Don't make it too thin.
- Using cookie-cutters, cut out pairs of shapes from the pie crust. Each pair will be a "top" and "bottom" for each taco-thang.
- Place "bottom" pieces on a lightly greased baking sheet.
- Spoon about a tablespoon of the taco mixture onto each piece.
- Sprinkle each with tomato and cheese.
- Place the "top" pieces and press edges to seal.
III.
Optional egg yolk paint:
- Place 1 egg yolk in each of 4 bowls.
- Into each bowl add 1 teaspoon of water and 1 to 3 drops of desired food coloring.
- Beat lightly.
- Decorate with egg yolk paint.
Cooking
- Preheat oven to 375°.
- Bake 10 to 12 minutes or until golden brown.
- Listen to AC†DC.
